What makes a Yorkshire Pasture Poultry Christmas Cockerel a more sustainable choice?

I rear all of my birds seasonally, from around April to October. This means every chicken grows during the months when nature is working at its best, and it allows me to use a pasture-raised system that genuinely supports — and improves — the land.

Pasture-raised poultry isn’t just about giving birds space; it’s about creating a cycle that works in harmony with nature. During the warmer months, the birds actively fertilise the soil as they roam, adding natural nutrients and improving soil structure. When winter comes, the pasture gets a well-earned rest, giving the land time to recover and regenerate. Over time, this approach helps build richer topsoil, healthier vegetation, and a more resilient ecosystem — which in turn produces better-quality meat.

Rearing through the warmer months also means using fewer resources. Chickens on pasture need far less additional feed in summer, because they can forage for insects and greens. In contrast, raising birds in the colder months can require almost twice as much feed, most of which is simply used to keep them warm rather than helping them grow. By avoiding winter rearing, I reduce feed use, fuel consumption, and the need for artificial heating — all of which lowers the environmental footprint of every bird.

This seasonal, pasture-led approach takes more time and care, but it creates healthier land, happier birds, and more sustainable meat for your Christmas table.
